Medical-Adjacent Silicone Tubing — USP Class VI at Retail Volume
The challenge
A US-based wellness-adjacent brand — brand narrative positioned around "medical-grade" quality and premium retail placement — needed silicone tubing for a new consumer accessory SKU where the product touched skin at moderate temperature (38-42°C) for extended contact periods (20-45 minutes per use). Standard peroxide-cure silicone was ruled out early: the extractables profile from peroxide byproducts wouldn't clear USP Class VI biological reactivity testing under USP <88> in-vivo panels. Platinum-cure LSR was the required chemistry from day one. Additional constraint: the customer needed per-batch extractables documentation, not a single reference batch cert.
How we approached it
We qualified a specific platinum-cure LSR compound from a USP Class VI-labeled compound house against the customer's specific extractables panel before quoting. First-article samples cleared USP <88> in-vivo test at an accredited lab (SGS) with room to spare on every analyte. Production runs began after first-article documentation was in the customer's compliance packet. Per-batch extractables testing bundled into standard pricing (not billed as line item) because the customer's audit workflow required it on every shipment. Material traceability chain — from compound-house lot through master-batch, through press cycle, through post-cure log, through inspection record — documented per ISO 9001 retention discipline. 36-month record retention on all batches.
Outcome
Program has now run 3 years at ~40,000 pieces per year across 3 SKU sizes. Zero regulatory incidents across the 3-year window. Every batch's USP Class VI extractables documentation has cleared retail audit including one FDA product review triggered by an unrelated adjacent-category recall. The USP Class VI + platinum-cure discipline added ~18% to unit cost over what a standard peroxide- cure silicone quote would have been. The customer recovered the premium in shelf-tier positioning at $35-60 retail — well above the price band where the standard silicone quote would have positioned the SKU. The customer's compliance team uses this program's documentation packet internally as the reference example when scoping other silicone components elsewhere in their product portfolio.
