Multi-Color Pet Slow-Feeder Program — Pantone Discipline at Scale
The challenge
A premium pet brand launching a coordinated slow-feeder + lick mat range needed silicone products coordinated to 6 retail-family finishes: muted sage, terracotta, dove grey, sand cream, deep navy, and blush pink. Six SKUs × 2 product types (slow-feeder + lick mat) = 12 unique color-product combinations. The procurement spec called for ±1 ΔE color match tolerance — already stricter than industry default (±2-3 ΔE). Their brand creative team confessed later they'd been quietly hoping for ±0.5 ΔE but hadn't asked because no Chinese OEM in their previous pet-category RFPs had hit it. Additional constraint: platinum-cured silicone required for USP Class VI extractables profile on direct-with-dog-tongue contact positioning.
How we approached it
We mixed color in master-batch (the silicone gum is dyed before molding) rather than as surface coating — a process discipline that adds 2-3 days to lead time but produces molecularly-uniform color through the part. Every batch tested with spectrophotometer against TPX Pantone reference. Color-cert filed per batch. Sample-to-production variation logged across the first 6 production cycles to confirm process repeatability before the customer committed to a multi-year program lock. Platinum-cured LSR on all 12 SKUs; per-batch FDA + LFGB + PFAS non-detect testing bundled at no add-on given the premium retail tier.
Outcome
All 6 finishes held ±0.5 ΔE across the first 6 production cycles. The customer's brand creative team flagged the result internally as "the first time a coordinated pet accessory range has actually looked coordinated on store shelves." Program has run 2.5 years at ~90,000 pieces/year across 12 SKUs. The customer's product team has since added 2 additional finishes (heather grey, warm oat) to the range, keeping us as the sole supplier for the coordinated pet accessory line. Zero PFAS-related regulatory issues in the 2.5 years, and the USP Class VI extractables documentation has cleared every premium retail audit the program has faced.
