Pet Lick Mat + Suction Bowl Family — 60N Pull-Force at

The challenge

A Top-5 US pet-lifestyle brand caliber customer arrived with a 9-SKU coordinated family — 3 lick mats, 3 slow-feeder plates, 3 suction-base bowls — after their previous Chinese OEM had shipped two seasons of parts with suction cups that released on wet countertops, lick-mat grooves that tore on demold at a 22% reject rate, and a faint peroxide-cure aftertaste their pet-taste-panel had flagged. The brand's retail buyers (Chewy / Petco / PetSmart tier) were about to pull shelf placement. Procurement needed: a numeric suction-cup release-gate (not marketing language), platinum-cure with documented VOC burn-off, ASTM D624 Die C tear strength on every incoming lot, and a tooling rebuild story their QA team could audit. Every prior RFP had come back with "strong suction" and no test method.

How we approached it

Suction geometry was redesigned around a 60N minimum wet pull-force on ceramic tile with a D65 water film at 23 °C — measured on a calibrated digital pull-gauge at 30-sample AQL 1.0 per production lot. Cure system was set to platinum (Pt) with a 4-hour 200 °C post-cure to drive residual VOCs under 10 ppm for taste-panel neutrality. Lick-mat cavities were re-cut EDM-textured with 1.8mm groove depth and 5° draft angles, tool life re-rated to 500k shots. Every incoming silicone gum lot is tear-tested to ≥ 28 kN/m per ASTM D624 Die C before it touches a press. Color match to brand Pantone runs through pet-safe masterbatch with heavy-metal migration verified against 21 CFR 177.2600 and LFGB Article 3. Retail-ready packaging (header card + hang-hole tolerance + barcode zone + poly bag spec) was locked in at the 5k confirmation gate, ahead of steady-state ramp.

Outcome

Program has run 3 years at ~140,000 pcs/yr across the 9-SKU family. Suction pull-force has held ≥ 60N on every batch (mean 67N, σ 3.2N across 36 monthly lots). Lick-mat demold rejects fell from the previous supplier's 22% to under 1.4%. The taste-panel signed off on the platinum-cure post-cure protocol at the 5k confirmation gate and has not re-flagged in 3 years. Dishwasher + freezer thermal cycling (-40 °C to 230 °C) validated with zero surface degradation at 200 cycles. Every batch clears stacked 21 CFR 177.2600 + LFGB Article 3 compliance with heavy-metal migration non-detect. Retail buyer QA gates have passed on every submission, and the customer's product team has since scoped a 3-SKU travel-bowl extension onto the same tool platform.
